A Resistance Reversal


The universe is vast, and somewhere, deep inside, you’ll find a Dry Martini with a Twist, and someone holding it, mind turning to mush, heart turning to ash, unable to put it down like the dying dog that it should be. 
 
Becoming someone that doesn’t drink alcohol is not like stopping someone from eating apple pie. It’s a process that makes you feel insane. There is an entity in your mind called: Resistance, and its purpose is to keep you stuck in this perpetual car wash of life, and one of the ways it does this is to teach you to lie.
 
I’m not talking about big fat lies. 
 
Little white lies.
 
It’s also a master at deception and misdirection. It knows that to keep getting the biggest tips, it needs to keep spinning the most believable stories, and man, do we human beings have a propensity to defend our stories with our lives. 
 
It’s a serpent.
 
Our lives are so dark that we don’t see it until its venom swims through our veins bragging to our DNA how it fucked up Adam and Eve. 
 
Empathy is the beating heart of 1000 Days Sober philosophy, but the liver, the thing that cleanses all of this shit, so our blood can stop the venom from ending the tick and the tock, is the hard question.
 
1000 Days Sober is a place of love, but it's also a place of a respectful challenge.
 
As Striver Kim pointed out this week, “I needed to start building some metal around my responsibility to take on Resistance rather than explaining it away.”
 
We ‘explain it away’ because that’s what Resistance does. We want to become someone that doesn’t drink alcohol; Resistance doesn’t want that to happen, so it takes us down the path of least resistance: what substitute AF drinks can I order, let’s stay in tonight, let’s tell Anabelle that I am on antibiotics. 
 
Following this path makes us feel like we are progressing, but the road is the same serpent eating its head. Busyness doesn’t equate to effectiveness. The purpose of its foul work is to keep you away from the other path, the one full of thorns, stinging nettles and bullshit - the one we need to tread.
 
How do I tell my wife that she makes me incredibly unhappy?
 
How can I remove the shackles of my children without drowning in shame and guilt?
 
How can I find new friends?
 
The path of least resistance leads to the cave, and it’s dark inside, so you’ll never see the way out, but we have people at 1000 Days Sober who can show you the way. Sometimes, a hand does the trick, and other times, you need a boot.
