How to Rebuild Your Sense of Self: Laura McKowen’s Journey to 1000 Days Sober

Some of us develop bad relationships through time. We seek other people’s approval, and we end up having low self-esteem. Then we turn to alcohol to numb negative feelings and emotions.

We should not avoid this kind of pain by abusing substances such as alcohol. Sobriety may force us to feel all the pain we felt in our life. However, the freedom we gain from being sober is worth it and fulfilling in the end. After all, we are lucky just to be alive and to feel.

In this episode, Laura McKowen shares her insights after being 1000 Days Sober. She talks about how sobriety granted her freedom despite the painful journey. Laura also discusses her internal struggle with low self-esteem and how she learned that she could find truth and wisdom within herself.

"It's painful to be in the world as someone who doesn't operate from their own centre and doesn't have a healthy sort of self-esteem. And so I drank a lot because that was painful and alcohol kind of drilled that down and made it tolerable for me".

"You have the strength. You have the wisdom. You have answers inside of you that other people don't have about you".

"When you're in that place and you've never heard people tell the truth about what this is like, it's very important and cathartic to hear other people who really get it".

"I was in a lot of pain, and it was one of those where I knew the pain was for good. I knew it was like, “Oh, I can feel this. I can finally feel my life. I can feel all of it. And it fucking hurts”. But we are lucky we get to wake up. We get to be in our lives and be in ourselves, and that was never going to happen for me with drinking".

"I've been in more pain in sobriety than I ever was in drinking. It's a different kind of pain, though, you know. It's like pain that I’ll get me it. I can learn from it".
